The Deal, hardcover book, 2021

The Deal is an art book with a fresh take on the play Faust by Goethe and the well-known "deal with the devil" trope. It is stylized as a trash journal from the perspective of the two main characters, Mephistopheles and Faust, with the intention of showcasing their physical appearances as well as their inner worlds as it is reimagined by the artist. Envisioned as an unconventional approach to character design, the book is made with the intent of showing a snippet of the characters' universe.

Hardcover bookbinding, collaging, character design and typography were the main techniques used to bring the book to life.

It is a direct continuation of the 2021 “The Deal with the Devil” screenprint series, which aimed to evolve the interpretations of the characters at a higher level.

The book can be experienced through this video of the full flip-through.

A closer look at the tarot cards that were made specifically for two of the characters’ sections in the book, which were selected based on their story arc in the original play.

Development

Snippets of the development process consist of A6 postcards with spontaneous sketches and sketchbook pages aiming to visualise the characters in a more detailed way and map out the overall aesthetic of the world they exist in.

The first versions of the collage style and techniques to be possibly used are also the part of the sketchbook development.
